WHAT IS THE MILL?

THE MILL is the biggest project ever undertaken by Theatrefront. It is a completely unique theatrical endeavour comprised of a series of four full-length plays, written by four Canadian playwrights. All four plays follow the lives of the inhabitants of Brody, a small rural Canadian pioneer town. The story begins as the new owner of the town’s abandoned mill arrives and attempts to re-open the mill, much to the protest of many of her neighbours. Throughout the series of four plays we learn the horrifying story of the mill’s past, and the secrets of the town’s inhabitants.

Each of the four scripts will be created in a different style chosen by the playwright. Though the setting is historical, the over-all tone of THE MILL will be modern, irreverent, and multi-disciplinary. While the four plays are linked by a larger narrative arc, each play will stand alone.

THE MILL is a new story-telling idea for theatre. We are interested in attracting a theatre audience that is excited to return to each new play in the series, to watch characters and stories develop over a series of plays. and to watch the ensemble of actors grow and stretch themselves by tackling contrasting performance styles.

WHEN IS IT HAPPENING?

The first development workshop of THE MILL will take place this August.

Stay tuned for more information about upcoming public workshop presentations of THE MILL…
